Oxford CC win U11 League Pool 4

Oxford CC U11s won a very tight pool winning 6 out of their 8 fixtures and had a number of close matches during the season. With most of the squad in the U10 age bracket (or in some cases even younger) they were nearly all new to hardball cricket and they adapted very quickly to the new demands required of them. The depth of our bowling was a particular strength and we were regularly able to use 8 bowlers in each match. Leading wicket takers were Joe Joyce, Fabian Hurt, Mustafa Shah, Dara Bannerman and Arthur Stewart. Meanwhile, Dylan Parkinson, Cole Parekh, Xander Smith, Charlie Esiri and Cameron Clarke led the way with the bat. Angus Barnard had a great first season with the gloves claiming 6 victims and scoring important runs at the top of the order. It was an enjoyable season and the team ethic in the squad will serve them well next summer.

Barmy Army – Cricket Sixes Fans World Cup

The Barmy Army, England’s world-famous supporters club, is proud to be hosting the
inaugural Cricket Sixes Fans World Cup on Thursday 19 th August at Aston Rowant Cricket
Club in Oxfordshire.

The tournament will bring together the global community of cricket fans and will see teams
from six of the major cricketing nations fighting it out for the right to be crowned Fans
World Cup Champions.

An event for all the family – the action-packed day will see 19 games played across two
pitches, live music, food vendors, a charity auction and a live Barmy Army podcast recording
with special guest, and West Indies legend, Joel Garner.

The six-a-side, five overs per innings, format will enable a celebration of cricket and give
players and spectators alike the chance to enjoy a multitude of quickfire matches as teams
battle to make the final at the end of the day.

Old rivalries will be renewed as the Barmy Army take on their Indian counterparts, the
Bharat Army, in the opening game in what is being dubbed as the unofficial 6 th Test of the
big summer series between the two nations. Teams representing South Africa, Australia,
Barbados and Bangladesh will also be looking to make it to the final in the tournament
which starts at 10.30am.

Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy this flagship tournament and get behind their
respective national team. Time will tell if the Barmy Army can follow in Eoin Morgan’s men’s
footsteps and secure England another World Cup trophy.

Goring on Thames win U11 League Pool 5 and Pool 2 of Super 8s

Pool 5

The Goring-on-Thames CC Under 11 league team enjoyed an unbeaten league season, beating Henley CC, Peppard Stoke Row CC and Warborough and Shillingford CC twice each in the process, and there were some fantastically tight finishes. In what was an exceptionally strong and big year group of over 40 players, the team’s strength in depth was evident in many of the games. All the boys bowled 2 overs in each of the games and the batting order was re-jigged each game to give all the boys the opportunity for a longer innings. The batting was led by Jack Walsh, George Logan and Jackson Galbraith, but all the boys contributed during the season. Archie Butlin bowled with genuine pace and he and Will Roberts took the most league wickets. The teamwork and ever-improving fielding was also a joy to see. As it stands, the team has won all 11 matches it has played this season, with two friendlies against Tiddington and Aston Rowant to come.

Super 8s

A very strong squad performance from the Goring Super 8’s over the season saw them go unbeaten in their group. The bowlers worked hard on their line and length in training and it paid off, with lots of wickets and a good economy rate. The batting pairs all ran well between the wickets, played to the situation and protected their wickets, even managing to go an innings without losing a wicket against Challow and Childrey at home. They played well as a team, supporting each other in the field and lining the boundary to support the batters. The performances on the pitch reflected the hard work they put in at training and it was good to see a promising group of cricketers develop into a strong team over the course of the season.

Chipping Norton & District CC win U11 League Pool 1

Chipping Norton & District CC won Pool 1 of the U11 league losing only once during the competitive season. Darren De Bruyn their U11 coach provided the summary of the season:

What a season!

Considering this was their first year with a hard ball and several players were still u10, the enthusiasm was palpable. My first objective was to get them used to match conditions so getting them out in the middle and coaching them as we play was the strategy behind our success. Every player was going to learn how to bowl, bat, catch and throw.

Our first warm up game was against Cropredy who were well prepared and had several games under their belt. Though we were soundly beaten, the experience we gained from that fixture was invaluable. We realised very quickly what it means to bowl straight, bat aggressively and be alive in the field. All three contributions, if executed correctly, win games.

Coincidentally, our first league game was against Cropredy again. This time we were in the game and much more competitive. We lost by 18 runs in the end with plenty of batting power still in the changing room. Probably my lack of coaching experience was responsible for the loss.

Beyond this game the team went from strength to strength and won every home and away fixture in the league by beating Banbury (home and away), Cropredy (at home) and Horley (home and away). The away game at Banbury needs a particular mention, as it came down to the last ball and luckily Chippy came out on top. What an experience for both teams to be a part of. The tension and pressure was great, even the several parents on the boundary were starting to get involved. Cricket was definitely the winner.

A great season overall.

Players embraced a new type of cricket, some have even been asked to play up an age group which matched their skill set and challenged them further. The season has certainly boosted their confidence, encouraged a deeper interest in the game and I very much look forward to what next season brings.

County Men Team Beat Wiltshire in Thriller

Oxfordshire secured a stunning four-wicket win today against Wiltshire in their second NCCA Three Day Championship match of the season at Salisbury and South Wilts CC.

Oxfordshire was set 208 to win the match on the final day going into the final session after tea. Marcos Campopiano hit a superb 86 which included 10 fours and four sixes, while Tom Cosford hit 50 and Freddie Smith 39 to guide Oxon to a four-wicket win in the last over of the match.

Wiltshire had won the toss on day one and elected to bat managing 97 all out in their first innings. Gareth Andrew (4-36), Prav Chahal (3-28) and Alex Chapman (3-21) were the picks of the bowlers. In response, Oxfordshire managed to get a first-innings lead as they reached 204 all out with debutant Zach Lion-Cachet hitting a superb 73 to give Oxon a lead of 107. Freddie Smith (31) and Tom Cosford (29) also contributed with the bat for Oxon.

Wiltshire in their second innings made 314-6 before declaring just on the stroke of tea, thanks to 104 from Mynott, 41 from Stearman, and 49 from Young to set up an entertaining final session of the day when setting Oxon 208 to win.

Oxfordshire now hosts Berkshire in their next championship match starting on Sunday 15th of August at Thame Town CC.

County Men Team News v Wiltshire

Oxfordshire Cricket is pleased to announce the 12 man squad selected to play against Wiltshire this Sunday in a three-day NCCA Championship match at Salisbury and South Wilts Sports Club (SP2 9NY.

Oxfordshire will be seeking to get their first win of the season in the NCCA Three Day Championship after last weeks eight-wicket defeat to Cheshire.

This week saw action in both the Bernard Tollett Semi-Finals and Wilf Bennett Quarter Finals.

Bernard Tollett Semi-Finals:

Banbury CC beat Oxford Downs by 50 runs with Lloyd Sabin 51no; Charlie Hill 48 & 3 for 7 and Richard Simpson 3 for 15.

Aston Rowant CC beat Horspath CC in an absolute thriller by 1 run with Thomas Condon 50; George Reid 36no ; Leo Bethell 2 for 16 and Karl Penhale 2 for 26. For Horspath, Anupam Sanklecha 38; Tyrone Eyles 28; LLoyd Belcher 2 for 15 and Jehan Mohammad 2 for 22.

The holders, Banbury CC to face Aston Rowant CC in the Bernard Tollett Trophy Final at Wormsley Cricket Ground on Saturday 18 September.

Wilf Bennett Quarter Finals:

Aston Rowant CC to face Banbury CC in the 2021 Bernard Tollett Trophy

Tuesday night saw the Semi-Finals of the Bernard Tollett Trophy to determine who will be playing in the showcase Final at Wormsley Cricket Ground on Saturday 18 September.

At Ermont Way, Banbury hosted Oxford Downs in a repeat of last year’s Final where Downs won the toss and elected to field. A quickfire 18 off 8 balls from Richard Simpson saw Banbury get off to a fast start , however Banbury soon found themselves at 42 for 2 with the loss of both openers. An 88 run partnership between Lloyd Sabin 51no off 43 balls and Charlie Hill 48 off 43 balls took Banbury to 130 for 3. The final overs saw wickets tumble with a total of 144 for 6 off their 20 overs. The pick of the Downs bowlers was Tom Costley with 3 for 14 off his 4 overs.

Downs in their reply soon found themselves at 8 for 2 with both wickets for Charlie Hill. Downs never really recovered with only Tom Costley 23 looking like he may turn the game around, however, wickets continued falling at regular intervals until all out for 94 in the 19th over. The pick of Banbury’s bowlers being Charlie Hill with 3 for 7 and Richard Simpson with 3 for 15 supported by excellent all round fielding.

Banbury won by 50 runs. Thanks to Richard Lambden and Martin Thomas for umpiring; Steven Claridge and Simon Davie for scoring.

The Recreation Ground in Horspath saw an altogether tighter affair with the visitors, Aston Rowant coming out on top by 1 run.

Rowant won the toss and elected to bat with Thomas Condon 50 off 55 balls being the mainstay of the innings and a cameo by George Reid 36no off 18 to reach a total of 161 for 5 off their 20 overs. 2 wickets apiece for Lloyd Belcher 2 for 15 and Jehan Mohammad 2 for 22.

In reply, Horspath were in trouble at 35 for 4, however, Tyrone Eyles 28, Anupam Sanklecha 38 and good contributions from the lower order took Horspath to 160 for 8 off their 20 overs. Leo Bethell taking 2 for 16 off his 4 overs; Karl Penhale 2 for 26 off 4 overs and Hayden Rossouw 1 for 12 off 3 overs being the pick of the bowlers.

Thanks to Arun Oram and Kingsley Woodland for umpiring; Simon Groves and Peter Coleman for scoring.

It was great to see 7 of the County’s U18 squad playing across the two games.

Banbury will now face Aston Rowant in the Bernard Tollett Final on Saturday 18 September at Wormsley.
