Vacancy – Community Cricket Officer
We are delighted to invite outstanding candidates to apply for an exciting opportunity at
Oxfordshire Cricket.
Community Cricket Officer c.£18,000-£20,000 depending on experience
Oxfordshire Cricket is a thriving organisation and we are proud of our achievements in delivering our Community programmes across the county. These programmes are aimed at growing the game beyond traditional audiences and providing a flow of talent to our clubs and pathway programmes. This role is also about nurturing and maximising the potential, of transitioning players and ensuring that experiences foster a lifelong connection within the game.
The continuing growth of our programmes has created a demand for additional qualified coaches who are enthusiastic about continuing to develop and improve their coaching skills and are a level two coach.
The Community Officer role is central to the successful delivery of our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) schools programme and street programmes. This role will also deliver on programmes that include but are not limited to Primary and Secondary Schools, junior pathway coaching, community projects and initiatives.
Successful candidates will be responsible for delivering safe, engaging and inspiring cricket sessions to children and young people, as well as engaging and inspiring teachers and parents. Additionally, they will need to have strong communication, organisational and reporting skills and the drive to achieve set outcomes. Due to the nature of the sport, this role will require working unsociable hours from time to time.
If you would like to discuss either of these roles further, then please contact Zoe Pugh at [email protected]. We would gratefully receive all Cover Letters and CV’s submitted to [email protected] by 5PM on Monday 17th of October. Oxfordshire Cricket is committed to Safeguarding and DBS certificates will be checked and references taken up.
Interviews will take place after the 17th of October.

Terry Strange
The former Oxfordshire fast bowler Terry Strange died on 8 September aged 89. Although availability limited his appearances for the county, Terry took 89 wickets in 41 matches at an average of 23.79. He made his debut against Cornwall in 1953, taking 3 wickets in each innings and making what was to be his top score of 48 not out batting at number 10. Terry recalled how, as a newcomer to the team, the captain Will Inge just threw him the ball and told him to set his own field! When batting with Inge, the instruction was simply “run when I tell you!”.
Terry’s most productive season was in 1962 when in 5 matches he took 22 wickets at an average of 16.50 and recorded his best figures of 6-33 against Bucks at Ascott Park. His final season for the county was as late as 1970 when, aged 37, he played 6 Championship matches. That year also included one of Terry’s favourite memories – bowling against the England Test players Tom Graveney and Basil D’Oliveira in the Gillette Cup match against Worcestershire at Morris Motors. He returned the respectable figures of 9 overs for 21 runs in Oxfordshire’s defeat.
Terry’s club cricket was initially for the YMCA and later the Oxford XIII Club. On retiring from cricket aged 48, he switched to golf and was still managing 3 rounds a week when well into his eighties.
One of his playing contemporaries, Robin Winstone, remembers Terry as always being immaculately turned out. He didn’t always try to bowl fast but could up his pace if desired. Robin also recalls him as an excellent fielder, being one of the best throwers from the deep.
Some of Terry’s other colleagues have sent the following recollections of him:
My memories of Terry Strange are not only that he was a very good bowler, he also loved playing cricket. You would never witness any histrionics that you see these days. If he took a wicket or bowled “a jaffa” (which he frequently did) he would simply turn and walk back to his mark ready to deliver the next ball and always with a smile on his face. He tended to swing the ball away from the right-handed batsman and bowled with a somewhat low arm but with a smooth run up and textbook action. The ball would appear to gain pace off the wicket and hit the bat hard. He was one of the very few bowlers that I never saw Mike Smith (the county wicket-keeper at the time) stand up to the wicket and yet Terry was one of the most consistent line and length bowlers in both club and Minor County cricket. It is fair to say that he would have gained more LBW decisions had it not been the policy of umpires to give a batsman not out if they played forward. As a loyal and hugely respected club cricketer it was only unavailability that prevented him playing more Minor County games for Oxfordshire. During his career all ten two-day games were played midweek and in August. A person’s employment took priority and they were only permitted two weeks holiday. Terry gave me unstinting encouragement when I came into the Oxfordshire team as a youngster and was a man respected and admired both on and off the field.
Mike Nurton
Terry was quite a quick bowler, but I don’t remember any particular type of swing – he certainly hit the seam and could produce very awkward bounce. A quiet, unobtrusive man, most at home with his excellent mates in the Thirteen Club. When I opened the batting for North Oxford, his bounce was more than awkward – and those were helmetless days!
Alan Crossley
My own recollections are of a fine fast bowler with such a modest and even temperament. I never once saw him kick the turf, complain about the ball, or mutter insults to anyone. If he’d been hit for four it was back to his mark and come in again with renewed energy. A joy for any captain to have in his team.

Doug Eva Obituary
The former County Cricket Treasurer Doug Eva died on 27 July, aged 92. Doug had been Treasurer of the County Club from 1970 until 1973, when Simon Porter took over. More remarkably though, he was Treasurer of the Oxfordshire County Cricket Association throughout its existence from 1969 to 1995. The two organisations merged to become the Oxfordshire Cricket Board in 1996.
Managing the finances across county and club competitions, youth and indoor cricket is no small task and Doug carried this activity out unstintingly for over 25 years. He was well suited to the role, working as he did in a bank, initially at Martins Bank on Carfax before joining Barclays where he became bank manager in Marston.
His full name was Edmund Douglas Greenwood Eva but he was always known as ‘Doug’. He had 3 main interests: Cricket, Bowls, and the Frewin Club. Aside from the treasurer roles, Doug was a long-time playing member of the Erratics as a leg spin bowler. When he finished playing cricket, he took up bowls. At the Frewin Club in St Aldate’s Doug was the longest serving member at the time of his death.
At his funeral the chapel was full to overflowing, a clear indication of Doug being a well liked and respected man.

The Felix Byam Shaw Award
This award is presented in memory of Felix Byam Shaw who tragically passed away from meningitis whilst on holiday in France in 2014. Felix was the Oxfordshire Under 14’s captain at the time of his passing, and his death shocked, and saddened Oxfordshire Cricket.
In his memory, the Felix Byam Shaw Award was formed with the family donating a magnificent trophy to be awarded annually to a player nominated from the pathway, who displayed similar traits to Felix. The Felix Byam Shaw Award recognises selflessness and the desire to succeed or to help others to succeed and is presented to a player from within the pathway. The annual presentation of the award remembers Felix, with the trophy honouring his legacy and keeping him as a part of the Oxfordshire cricket family, despite his tragic passing.
The Felix Byam Shaw Award was presented by Kieren Bushnell, Neil Pickup and Jane Byam Shaw. Six players were nominated for the award with citations read by Neil Pickup and Kieren Bushnell and each receiving a certificate. The deserving winner in 2022 was presented the trophy by Jane Byam Shaw.

Shipton Under Wychwood CC are crowned T20 Wilf Bennett Trophy Champions

Banbury CC Retain Hartwell Cup
The holders rattled up a formidable 179-5 after electing to bat at the picturesque Sir Paul Getty’s Ground before sending Horspath crashing to 85 all out.
As the peace and tranquility of the Chiltern Hills was disturbed by flamethrowers and music to accompany boundaries and wickets, Joe White and Richard Simpson got Banbury off to a flying start. With a crowd of more than 300 looking on, they smashed 56 off the first five overs before Max Smith was introduced to the attack and briefly stopped the run spree with a maiden. While Horspath dropped chances, the Banbury openers took the score to 72 before Simpson skied a return catch to leg-spinner Josh Richardson after making 28 from 24 balls.
Olly Clarke and Ali Short ensured there was no let-up for the Horspath bowlers, though, with a punishing stand of 76 for the third wicket off 7.1 overs. Short was the busier of the pair employing a full range of strokes, including a six over long on and a reverse sweep for four, before he was caught at mid-wicket by acting skipper Lloyd Belcher off Smith for 45 from 28 balls to leave Banbury 152-3.
Clarke had made a stylish 39 off 34 deliveries when he was bowled by Smith, who finished with fine figures of 2-17 from his four overs, while Belcher’s superb throw from the mid-wicket boundary saw Charlie Hill run out off the penultimate ball of the innings.
Captain Lloyd Sabin, the top scorer in the Home Counties Premier League this season with 788 runs, even had the luxury of batting himself at No 7 and coming to the crease at the non-striker’s end for the final delivery.
Banbury’s total was two runs more than they posted 12 months ago in their 37-run victory over Aston Rowant and was always going to present a stiff challenge.
With Ollie Wright picking up a couple of wickets after Dave Eaton made the breakthrough, Horspath were soon in trouble at 24-3. Hawtin and Smith provided some respite, taking the score to 58 before the former was caught by Clarke on the boundary off Hill for a run-a-ball 24.
It sparked an almighty collapse with five wickets going down for eight runs to leave Horspath in disarray at 66-8. Teenager Charlie Haselgrove was the chief destroyer with 4-14 off three overs, including accepting an excellent low caught and bowled opportunity, with his haul seeing him named Man of the Match. Eaton finished with 2-7 and Wright 2-14 as Horspath were all out off 17 overs to leave Banbury deserved winners.
The game was preceded by the teams lining up for a minute’s silence in memory of Her Majesty The Queen before the national anthem was played.
