Club Development 2022 Update – in excess of £140K paid to Oxfordshire Clubs

This week saw the end of the first year of the ECB County Grant Fund for clubs where any monies had to be spent by 31 January.

We approved grants for the sum of £108,277 in line with our allocation from the ECB across 13 clubs and each of the 3 ECB themes with projects for solar panels, new Practice Nets, Non-Turf Pitches and improving Pavilion facilities.

The Grant monies in addition to the partnership funding of just short of £100K saw the total investment in cricket in the county in excess of £200K, not to mention the £30K plus of the Inspire to Play Grants earlier in 2022.

All the applications that were sufficiently well progressed were completed with Grants being paid in the final week.

The scheme for 2023 will be launched soon by the County; will follow similar themes, however, unfortunately like other counties have received a reduced allocation for 2023.

Club Scorer Course

Oxfordshire Association of Cricket Officials

will be running an ECB ACO Club Scorer course on the following dates:

Saturday 4th March & 25th March 2023

At Oxford Downs CC OX29 7QH

Cost is £30 per course and includes all course materials tea and coffee but you will need to bring your own lunch on each day.

This course is for anyone wanting scoring on a regular basis and is the only one to teach you how to score comprehensively. This course is suitable for complete beginners and existing scorers who want to improve their skills,

we will also touch on electronic scoring during the course.

The course does not teach the Laws of Cricket and all potential participants are advised to use the MCC on-Line Laws Resource to ensure they have a knowledge of The Laws applicable to scorers.

New Safeguarding Courses

These courses are for all those who have a specialist role in cricket including Coaches, Activators, Officials, Committee Members, Captains and Club Safeguarding Officers

If you perform a specialist role in cricket we ask you to complete the ‘Safeguarding for Specialist Roles’ first and then proceed to complete the appropriate top up module below:

Safeguarding for Captains and Team Managers
Safeguarding for Coaches and Activators
Safeguarding for Officials (Umpires and Scorers)
Safeguarding for Committee Members and Club Safeguarding Officers

The Safeguarding for Specialist Roles training should take around 1 hour to complete and the top up modules around 20 minutes. The courses are valid for 3 years.

Cropredy CC to play in the ECB Indoor National Club Championship 2023

Our County Indoor Champions, Cropredy CC, have been drawn against Ashton-Under-Hill from Worcestershire in the County Playoff Round.

Worcestershire are hosting the fixture at the Cricket Centre at PHHS, Evesham on Saturday 4th March from 7-9pm.

Good luck to James Coleman and his team.

The Winners from the County Play Off will then proceed to the Midlands Regional Finals Day at Uppingham School on Sunday 26th March (subject to final confirmation):

– In the Semi-Final they would face the winners from the County Play Off from Norfolk and Bedfordshire

– If successful, in the Regional Final they would meet the winners of Lincolnshire and Huntingdonshire.

The National Finals are then at Lords on Sunday 2 April.

Stuart Murphy Leaves Oxfordshire Cricket

It is with regret that Oxfordshire Cricket belatedly announces that Stuart Murphy resigned from his role as part-time County Safeguarding Officer in December. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks for the huge amount of work that Stuart did firstly in a volunteer capacity and latterly as a paid employee to prepare Oxfordshire Cricket to meet the Safeguarding criteria of the ECB. Stuart was relentless in his desire to ensure we have appropriately trained staff and volunteers as well as the correct processes and systems in place to provide the best service possible to keep everyone involved in Oxfordshire Cricket safe. We will greatly miss Stuart’s expertise and experience which will now be devoted to his full-time role as the ECB Disabilities Personal Development & Welfare Officer.

Stuart’s departure leaves a vacancy to work alongside Lesley Pykett. The role includes but is not limited to –

Being the point of contact with the ECB Safeguarding team,
Writing a monthly Board report,
Liaising with the Board Safeguarding lead,
Dealing with any safeguarding concerns raised in a timely manner,
Promoting safeguarding at all times by word and deed,
Attending relevant OCB and ECB meetings, webinars and conferences,
Supporting the education and training of everyone within Oxfordshire Cricket.

Oxfordshire Bulls & Falcons – State School Support Programmes Update

We are delighted to share an update on our State School Support programmes, the Oxfordshire Bulls and Oxfordshire Falcons.

Oxfordshire Bulls and Falcons – History

The Oxfordshire Bulls and Falcons programme forms part of Oxfordshire Cricket’s strategy to provide targeted support for state school players who may not receive the same level of opportunity to develop their talent as their peers within the independent sector. Via these programmes, we provide coaching and match play opportunities for state school pathway players in order to help bridge the opportunity gap between independent and state sectors and to assist us in developing a deeper, richer talent pool within the county.

In 2021-2022 we broadened the Oxfordshire Bulls programme to support even more state school children than in previous years and we were extremely proud to introduce the Oxfordshire Falcons programme that offered targeted support for state school girls within our pathway. 49 hours of coaching support across the winter months were supplemented by a total of 24 fixtures, including a Bulls Under 11 v Ace Programme fixture which Oxfordshire Cricket hosted at Wormsley Estate, that followed through the season for a range of girls and boys age groups.

Oxfordshire Bulls & Falcons – 2022/23

In 2022-2023 it is our ambition to sustain the levelling up opportunities afforded by the Oxfordshire Bulls and Falcons programmes and to enhance the offering, removing cost as a barrier for participation by making the programme free-to-access for all state-educated children.

In addition to this, the Oxfordshire Bulls and Falcons’ programmes have expanded to offer greater access to additional support across the Winter months. From November through to April, over 100 hours of coaching support has been offered to state school players within our pathway, who attend School Years 7, 8, 9 & 10.

The summer months will see 24 fixtures across a broader range of age groups. Fixtures are arranged against numerous independent schools within Oxfordshire, as well as other cricketing organisations such as Lords Youth and The Ace Programme.

We are thankful to St Helen & St Katharine School, St Edward’s School and Abingdon School, who host our activity during the winter months, and to all Schools and Organisations who host us for fixtures across the Summer.

Oliver Clarke Announced as the new NCCA Championship Captain

Oxfordshire Cricket is delighted to announce the appointment of Oliver Clarke as the new red ball captain ahead of the 2023 NCCA Championship season.

Clarke succeeds Jonny Cater as captain in championship cricket following his six years at the helm, with Oxfordshire moving towards a split captaincy approach. Cater will remain as captain in both T20 and 50 over cricket and will be supported by Clarke in his appointment as vice captain in white ball cricket. Clarke has been a key member of the red ball team in recent years and he will be aiming to build upon the success of the Championship side that finished second in the NCCA Western Division 1 in 2022 and who won the NCCA Championship in 2021.

Oxfordshire Cricket would like to congratulate Oliver Clarke on his appointment and wish him every success in his new role as captain of the championship side.

Reacting to his appointment Oliver Clarke said:

“It is a great privilege to be appointed as Oxfordshire captain for the NCCA Championship XI. It is an exciting time for cricket in Oxfordshire with club sides at the top of the HCPCL and so many talented young players coming through our pathway into both NCCA and first-class cricket.

I am very fortunate to be taking over from Jonny Cater. The transformation in the side since he took over as captain is remarkable and largely down to the work that he has put in on and off the pitch. It is disappointing that he will not be playing for us next season, but I respect his decision to spend more time with his young family.

I am particularly excited to work more closely with Rupert Evans. He has had such an enormous influence on my cricket since I joined the Oxfordshire pathway. The ethos that he has created as coach is fantastic and people genuinely love playing cricket for him. I hope that this is something we are able to carry forward through my tenure as captain.

Since joining the county as part of the pathway, I have always loved playing cricket for Oxfordshire and look forward to the new challenge ahead, looking to lead a side to recreate the success that Jonny has been able to achieve over the past few seasons.”

Head Coach, Rupert Evans said:

“Congratulations to Oliver Clarke on his appointment as 3-day Championship Captain.

Ollie is a product of the Oxfordshire Pathway and Emerging Players programme. He made his County Championship debut against Cheshire at Banbury CC in 2016 while still playing in the County Under 17 side. Since his debut, Ollie has developed into a three-dimensional player who has produced many match-winning performances for the county.

He has gained captaincy experience over the past few seasons as captain of the County 2nd X1. He also captained the first team in the showcase game against Sussex at Hove in 2021 and against Wiltshire in the Championship game at South Wilts CC in 2021.

Ollie is well respected by his teammates and opponents. I am pleased he has been appointed to succeed Jonny Cater and I’m looking forward to supporting him in his new role.”

Player Development Workshops – February

We are delighted to let you know about the Player Development Workshops that we are running during the February half term, Monday 13th to Friday 17th of February.

We have scheduled a varied programme or workshops that targets a blend of specific discipline, a game theme and the opportunity for indoor match-play. Every session is available for both Boys and Girls. Please see below a timetable of programme events, along with a booking link for each workshop. We ask that you please book carefully, making sure you choose the correct session for your child’s age. The Age Group eligibility table will help you to select the correct session for your child.

The Batters – a batting only workshop, which will cover various themes within batting including; playing swing bowling, scoring off the back foot and facing spin.

The Seamers – a workshop focusing on supporting players who bowl seam, swing or pace. The session will look to develop each seamer’s technical, tactical and physical ability.

The Spinners – a workshop focusing on supporting players who bowl spin. The session will look to develop each spinner’s technical, tactical and physical ability.

The Keepers – a workshop specifically catering for wicket-keepers. Looking to develop each keeper’s technical, tactical and physical ability.

T20 Skills Camp – a varied session exploring the batting, bowling and fielding skills associated with shorter format cricket.

Test Match Skills Camp – a varied session exploring the batting, bowling and fielding skills associated with the longer form of the game.

The 100 Ball Competition – this session will utilise the indoor space to run two hundred ball games (per session). Players who sign on will be split into two teams, who will compete against each other across the 3 hour session. Rules will be adapted throughout to maximise the player experience.

All of the workshops are specifically designed for Representative, Club or School players who have or currently play hard ball cricket. Sessions will be led by the Performance team, alongside other coaches who work across our Pathway or Emerging Player Programmes.

These Workshops will use a hard ball and all players will need the appropriate playing equipment. Each session will be delivered using a 1:4 Coach to Player ratio, or 1:6 Coach to Player ratio, to provide greater player development opportunities.

Age Group Eligibility

Players MUST be born within the age group category.

Age Groups 2022-23

U15 – 1/9/2007 to 31/8/2008

U14 – 1/9/2008 to 31/8/2009

U13 – 1/9/2009 to 31/8/2010

U12 – 1/9/2010 to 31/8/2011

U11 – 1/9/2011 to 31/8/2012

U10 – 1/9/2012 to 31/8/2014

Booking Information

Please note that spaces will be limited at all workshops and will be booked on a first come first served basis. Once all the places are booked the session will no longer be available to make a booking.

Player Requirements

Players need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for indoor cricket coaching environments. Players MUST bring their own HARD BALL playing equipment. No playing equipment will be available to borrow or share. Players should also bring a water bottle, meals or snacks and medical equipment as appropriate.
