The former Oxfordshire opening batsman John Hartley died on 14 October aged 89. He played 12 matches for the county in the period 1963-65, scoring 322 runs at an average of 15.33. His top score of 62 was against Dorset on the Smiths Industries ground in Witney in 1963. A stylish batsman, his record is perhaps not as good as expected from someone who scored many runs for his club Shipton-under-Wychwood, particularly in partnership with his prolific opening partner Dudley Hendy.
Son of Frank Hartley, one of the great triumvirate of brothers who played cricket for Oxfordshire in the 1920s, John was a farmer in Shipton. He also played for the SOA and was match manager for several of their annual fixtures. John was a Life Member of the OCB.
