Northamptonshire Girls Under 17 157-7
Oxfordshire Under-17 Girls travelled up to Corby on Tuesday for match number four in the Women's U17 County Championship.
On a slow surface, Northamptonshire struggled to gain early momentum against accurate seam bowling. However, it took a run out to finally separate the opening pair when Charley Noble at mid-off threw down the stumps at the far end with Simran Dehal (19) left stranded in mid-pitch.
By the midpoint of their innings, the hosts had only managed 62 runs for the loss of the one wicket. Lottie Oxton took full advantage of the pressing need to increase the scoring rate as she spun her way to figures of 8-1-23-4 and provided a thorough examination of the middle order's technique against the turning ball. The only batsman to successfully counter the conditions was left-handed opener Jodi Grewcock (77*), who made the most of being dropped in the first over, before blossoming in the closing stages and enabling Northamptonshire to set a challenging target of 158.
The Oxfordshire reply started brightly, with Georgia Brown (20) striking the ball cleanly through the off-side; but when she and Sophie Mitchelmore fell in quick succession, the visitors were in some difficulty at 33 for three in the tenth over. Laura Jacob and Georgia Haworth set about rebuilding the innings, cautiously at first, before Haworth managed to break the shackles by striking Bronwyn Richardson for successive boundaries. However, Richardson soon had her revenge when Haworth overbalanced and was dismissed for 25.
Lottie Oxton and Numa Shah perished in pursuit of quick runs, and when Jacob (17) fell to Elizabeth Page, Oxfordshire were left needing 50 runs from the last 8 overs with just three wickets remaining. Through a mixture of aggressive running and powerful driving through the covers, the eighth-wicket pairing of Chloe Westbury (13) and Lucy Johnson (15) reduced this target by 22 runs in the next four overs; but the loss of both batsmen to the medium pace of Laura Jasper in 37th over proved fatal as Oxfordshire fell short by 19 runs.
